Christian Aid Sponsered Walk Raises
£900
Nearly £900 has been raised through
a sponsored walk on Cannock Chase led by Wolverhampton soul
diva Beverley Knight. The eight-mile hike on Good Friday 2003,
brought in a grand total of £879.45. The walk was to
raise cash for Christian Aid, a charity for which Beverley
and her mother Deloris Smith are keen to raise funds. About
30 members of the public and a dog joined in with the walk.
The cash will now be put towards Christian Aid's work to combat
HIV and Aids. In March, Beverley and her mother raised £1,246
for the charity by auctioning off Beverley's designer clothes
and shoes at the Nation Christian Centre in Temple Street,
Wolverhampton. Penny Thompson, of Christian Aid, said she
was very pleased with the amount of cash raised.

Stephen
Lawrence Memorial Service
Beverley recently sang at the reception
at the Stephen Lawrence Memorial Service. A photo from the
event can be seen right here. She performed the track 'Fallen
Soldier' from 'Who I Am' dedicated to Stephen.
"When I originally wrote this short song it was with
race hate victim Stephen Lawrence in mind I played it to several
friends who each related the lyrics to special friends of
theirs who died in tragic circumstances, however it is still
a message of hope."

Check out the snaps below of Miss Beverley
Knight and the daughter of DJ Munro, taken backstage by the
DJ himself at Bev's Sands Centre gig in Carlisle last December!!
This was Tia's first big concert and she love it! She was
four when the photo was taken & she particularly liked
it when Bev shouted 'Bootleg Munro!' and pointed at them when
the band switched from the album version to Munro's remix
of 'Shape Of You'. 'That's you Daddy!' shouted Tia :)

Bev's Mum Speaks Up! 'Christian Aid
Week'
Bev's mum Delores Smith stood up in Lichfield
Cathedral this morning to talk about her experiences in Brazil,
and why she is backing Christian Aid. The speech was broadcast
live on BBC Radio 4 [92 - 95 FM & 198 LW] from 8.07am
- 8:45am, as part of a programme celebrating Christian
Aid week. Here is a transcript of her speech,
"Last
year I went with my daughter to visit Christian Aid partner
organisations in Brazil. It was a life changing experience.
I wasn't prepared for the amount of poverty and suffering
I saw. What had most impact on me, was the many people, more
than a million in Brazil who suffered from AIDS. But there
are stories of hope.
One
day, we went to a play school run by a girl called Ladia who
has AIDS. When she was first diagnosed she was sent home from
hospital to die. But a Christian Aid partner organisation
helped her to get medical support and a job at the play school.
The motivation of going to work with the children each day,
helps her to fight the disease and stay fit.
Thinking
about my own childhood in Jamaica, where there is also poverty
racism and homophobia, I realise that this could have been
me, and the Brazilian children could have been my children.
I found that I could not just walk away and carry on with
my life. I knew I had to do something to support the wonderful
work, which Christian Aid is doing among the poor people of
Brazil. Especially those with AIDS and now I am working to
raise money 4 Christian Aid and it's partners, as they fight
this terrible disease."
To
make a donation to this cause that Bev and Delores have been
supporting, please, please, please call 0845 330 0500, or
donate online via the Christian Aid webiste @ www.christianaid.org.uk/give/secure/hivaids.htm
or send a cheque to: Christian Aid, FREEPOST, London, SE1

Beverley Knight Launches Marks &
Spencer's Hosiery Range
Going "nude" will now be an
option for every woman - whatever her skin colour. Lingerie
firms are reflecting multicultural Britain by producing undies
to match every flesh tone.
In
the past "nude" or "flesh colour" meant
pasty pink shades only, while tan tights were always a scary
shade of orange. But Marks & Spencer and Pretty Polly
are pioneering new ranges so Asian, mixed race and black women
can match knickers, bras and tights to their skin perfectly.
R&B
singer Beverley Knight, is the model for Marks and Spencer's
new hosiery range, Shades. Beverley, said: "When I was
approached by M&S, the significance of the Shades launch
was not lost on me. Black women don't get many ranges created
solely for us, especially not on the High Street".

Christian Aid Week
"You
can help change the world - this week!" is the theme
of this year's Christian Aid Week, which runs from 11 - 17
May 2003 and is calling on people all across the UK and Ireland
to get involved and help change the world.
For
Christian Aid Week 2003 the charity is embarking on a new
and unique venture creating a morality map of Britain. Visitors
to www.christianaidweek.org.uk
are invited to put their morals to the test with Christian
Aid's Herometer - a quiz which places you in humorous moral
dilemmas. The total points scored by every participant are
added to a morality map. After taking the test you can download
free wallpapers.
You
can also take part in a writing competition entitled 'Who
is your hero?' Entrants are asked to describe in no more than
500 words the one person that stands as their greatest inspiration.
The prize is a Champagne Balloon Flight kindly donated by
Red Letter Days. Have a look at www.christianaidweek.org.uk

Christian
Aid Week is all about people - ordinary people doing extraordinary
things, people overseas, people in the UK, them, us, you,
me - the most important thing is to be a part of it! What's
more you'll be in good company joining the likes of Christian
Aid's celebrity supporters including chart-topping singer
songwriter Beverley Knight, Celebrity Fame Academy/ Casualty's
